Margaret Ringenberg

I love it when people tell me or send me info about amazing women pilots, especially when there’s a taildragger involved. Check out the link sent to me by Ray Johnson of his earlier interview with Margaret Ringenberg; pilot with +40,000 hours, many time Powder Puff Air Racer, World War II ferry pilot, instructor, and who in 1994 few around the world! “Girls Can’t be Pilots”; an Aerobiography about  Margaret Ringenberg Series #32 Part #1 Fly/In Cruise/In Video Magazine we visit with Margaret Ringenberg in her home. The voice of hypoxia

This is a radio transmission worth a listen to all pilots… “Here is a radio exchange between Cleveland Center controllers Stephanie Bevins, Marvin McCombs and Kalitta 66, a Learjet based in Ypsilanti, Michigan. KL66 suffered an insidious leak which caused depressurization of the aircraft. Listen to the audio and read the dialog as ATC figures it out.” “Following Bevin’s initiative, McCombs begins bringing the aircraft to the lowest altitude available in order to alleviate the possible oxygen deprivation. Unable to answer questions, the pilot is only able to respond to direct commands that the controllers now begin to voice.”Descend and maintain,” they repeat.”...

Skywagon Video over SFO by Nigel Ellis

It’s only recently I’ve become a fan of Cessna 180s & 185s but my love affair (from afar) goes back a lot longer with 190s and 195s. Don’t confuse any of these with a Cessna 175 which I used to jump out of. It had a nose wheel and a geared engine – and I’m NOT including that on any of my favorites lists! I happened on this wonderful video of a Cessna 185 Skywagon and it might make you consider taking out a loan and checking out Barnstormers next. The scenery is amazing. Double click so you get the wide-screen version! hold...

Lockheed Electra and more…

Saturday, September 4, 2010 Marion IN celebrated its 20th Annual Fly/in Cruise/in.  It turned out to be a wild day with winds blowing 20-25 mph, gusting to 30+ as the pancake breakfast got underway. Even though I expected to see the usual large crowds of people, what I didn’t expect to see was too many aircraft flying in.  (Boyd and I got in the day before) As it turns out, dozens of vintage, light sport, antique and general aviation aircraft were determined to give the winds their best shot and flew in anyway.   I pulled up a lawn chair and sat as close to runway 22 as I could get and watched for 2 straight hours as pilot after pilot demonstrated their best crosswind component landing abilities. (We’re talking 60 to 90 degree crosswinds at 30+ mph at times).  A P51 got it down OK but the perfect “10” had to go to the light weight J3 Cub who was getting bounced around like crazy on short final but hung in there, got that right wing down, patiently waited it out and absolutely slicked it on! Cub’s nice crosswind landing, Photo by Brian Matz This year’s special “guest” was a 1936 Lockheed 12A Electra Jr that was used in the filming of the 2009 movie “Amelia” starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere. Ray Johnson interviewing Pat Wegner (portraying Ameila) and Joe Shepherd, owner & pilot of a Lockeed Electra 12A Jr. * * Amelia flew a 1937 Lockeed Electra 10E * Lockeed Electra 1A2 used to film the movie From Joe Shepherd’s website see this short video about the aircraft and the movie....
