“This is why you should get your pilot’s license”, Swayne Martin

Here’s a video by Swayne Martin that totally rocks! This high school senior shows us all “This is why you should get your pilot’s license! A year in the life of a private pilot.” Great music and awesome to the max! Live it! Do it! Fly it! Get out there people, none of us are gonna live forever! I dare you not to want to go flying after watching this!...

Flying the Rans S7 with Jessie!

Flying the Rans S7 with Jessie!

Saturday was a spectacular flying day, all the better because my wonderful daughter Jessie joined me. Flying the S7, we formed up with a few other pilots heading to breakfast at Putnam County Airport then on to Metropolitan Airport for their Vietnam Veterans appreciation day. Jessie had her trusty phone along and created a happy little video in the process. Never flown an S7? Check out the view from the back of a tandem taildragger!...

“PLANES” the new movie by Walt Disney Studios

“PLANES” the new movie by Walt Disney Studios

Have you heard about the new animated aviation film “PLANES” in the works at Walt Disney Studios? I’ve seen the trailer and this is going to be one fabulous movie! Disney wisely appears to be going to great lengths to promote their new film to the general aviation community. They must be sending press releases to the really GREAT aviation websites (because I got one!!) and its infused with comments like “We would really love to partner on this film!” So me and my old buddies at Walt Disney Studios invite you to watch the trailer and see if you agree with me – this movie is going to knock the socks off pilots everywhere. It debuts in theaters on August 9, 2013. From above the world of “Cars” comes “Disney’s Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. “Disney’s Planes” takes off in theaters in 3D on Aug. 9, 2013, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters. Looks like Madeline Norcross is getting awfully close to soloing

Looks like Madeline Norcross is getting awfully close to soloing

Young ladies that passionately want to fly inspire the heck out of me! Something tells me 15 year old Mandeline Norcross is going to have that effect on a lot of people! One thing I happen to know about Madeline is, she LOVES Wacos. Her dad sent me this note and the link to a short video I have to share with you…. “As a proud dad, I couldn’t help sending you a QUICK VIDEO of  Madeline Norcross landing……with no assistance from her CFI.  I was invited to ride along, so I shot a quick video from the backseat with my iPhone. Madeline is 15 and hoping to solo on her 16th birthday.” “We hope to see you again at AirVenture. Safe Flying,” Tracy Norcross...

Lainey’s First Airplane Ride Video

Lainey’s First Airplane Ride Video

I know many of you have already seen this “Lainey’s first airplane ride” video but I must post it. I can’t remember the last time so many people forwarded the link to something they’ve enjoyed this much. Lainey belongs on LadiesLoveTaildraggers!...

Scariest Video Ever

Scariest Video Ever

Well, I really don’t think this is the ‘Scariest Video Ever’ but it is a truly freaky way to be employed. You won’t catch me climbing any of those 500′, or 600′, or 1000′ plus towers that I go way out of my way to avoid when I’m flying. Do not mess with these bad boys. They may have been ‘few and far between’ in the past but they are EVERYWHERE these days and just waiting to catch low flyers and scud runners. Just get too low … just get too close … and the guy wires are there waiting for you. I lost a friend years ago in a helicopter accident because they weren’t aware how far out the guy wires extended. Please don’t make the same mistake. Here’s a couple guys doing a job you couldn’t pay me enough to do. Really good video though!!...

Replay: Ladies Who Fly..Somewhere over the Rainbow

If you’re snowed in like me…. or the wind’s gusting like crazy…. or you’re just flat-out airplane less, this past LadiesLoveTaildraggers video just might brighten your day. The ladies take the most awesome, sometimes incredible photos!  This video, first posted in October 2011, proves it. We’re a lucky bunch, seeing the world from our high in the sky “box seats”. AND, Congratulations to Donna Twigg (see 3:27 for a beautiful lady and a beautiful Super Cub) from Port Lincoln, South Australia on her marriage this week to Philip Jones. Down Under beach wedding with a 5 Cub fly by!!...

Where oh Where am I gonna mount that thing?!!

Where oh Where am I gonna mount that thing?!!

Taildragger cockpits vary tremendously in size and panel configuration. Before GPSs I don’t remember panel space ever being a problem; the only “space” issue was figuring out how to get your body in and out of some of them. Once buckled in, if you could reach the rudder pedals you were good to go. Then along came the iPad and suddenly we’re all looking around trying to figure out where in the heck to stick this new, must have, gizmo. Only problem is, the iPad 3 is 7.3″ wide x 9.5″ long, and who has that kind of space on their panel? It’s possible to yoke mount it sometimes but what if you don’t have a yoke? You can literally stick mount it away from your panel but it can block other instruments from your view, a real problem. I’ve got a fairly new iPad3 and am using WingX Pro Skyradar-L, ADS-B by Radenna. The Skyradar-L gives GPS and ADS-B information via Wifi to the iPad which is running WingXPro. Its a moving map with up-to-date chart information and weather radar overlay updated every 5 minutes. All METARS available by touching the screen along the flight path. Should a TFR come into effect during your flight, it will automatically display it on the chart. I’m hooked on it already but have struggled with where best to mount it. Knee pad mounting can be a good option as you’ll see in this short video, especially if you’re doing aerobatics. If you happen to know who the gal is flying this Super Decathlon, tell her we need her on LadiesLoveTaildraggers! < In my Rans S7 with NO space to spare, the absolute best option for me is to mount it on my knee. Not perfect, I will say, but way better than big paper charts or mounting it somewhere that restricts my visability, radio or instruments. I have a different mount than the MyClip shown in this video but it appears to be a top-of-the-line product that’ll keep your iPad firmly fixed – and that’s just what you want!...

Videos from the Lady Taildraggers Flyin 2012

You may have heard we did Zumba at the Lady Taildraggers fly-in but did you know there’s a video? * Don’t believe it? Watch the 40 second video! And did you hear KSNH Airport Manager Montille Warren gave away 100LL fuel prizes at the flyin?!! Savannah-Hardin Co. Airport has the best price on fuel for miles around! Here’s a picture of Dana fueling up her Supercub at the bargain price of $5.10. Of course, there’s no beating free! Wendy & Kelly were the first two pilots to win 10 gallons of fuel at breakfast Friday morning. Check out their reaction in this 14 second video.  ...

New Smiley Creek video from Gail Schipper

Thanks to Gail Schipper for putting together this beautiful little video of the Woman Wise Airmanship Fly-in at Smiley Creek. Gail included some great aerial shots of many of the back-country Idaho strips and highlights of all the fun. Enjoy!!  ...
