Joy Smith (Alaska)

Joy Smith is based at a private airstrip in Alaska and flies a Super Cub and a Cessna 180 Skywagon.

Joy Smith just sent us pictures taken today of her first Supercub flight on skis – this year – from Alaska! (Joy, I found your email tonight right after I got home from watching another episode of ‘Flying Wild Alaska’ with some friends. Great timing!!!)

Yep, them’s skis!!

“Finally got the skis on my Cub this week and made my first ski flight today. What fun, and it is great to have the Cub sitting on the lake in front of the house now.”

“Looking forward to going across the Cook Inlet and finding some good places to land on the West Side.”

I have a Super Cub and have been flying since ’92. When I got my pilot’s license, my life was reshaped and flying became everything to me.

I fly as much and as often as I can. My favorite is flying and camping, but also enjoy flyins, flying to meet up with friends for breakfast or lunch, or just touch and goes in the pattern.

I just moved to Alaska this summer, and look forward to ski flying starting in a week or two.

Thanks, and look forward to participating in Ladies Love Taildraggers.

Joy

    Hi Joy,

Take a shovel and snowshoes!!! Looks like you are having a great time. When did you get the 180?

Kevin has skis on his 180 and it can get stuck..

    Hi Joy!

I’m so glad to see that you are in Alaska. I do so want to see Alaska. It is the only state I have not yet visited and I have the feeling that it will be my favorite when I do.

I owned a 180 for 23 years (had to sell 2 years ago); what a perfect airplane! I like Super Cubs, too, used to tow banners in them around the SF Bay Area. Currently I do not own a plane but one of my former students has a ’56 180 that I can fly for gas. 🙂 A trip to Alaska would be awesome.

Mostly what I do these days is instruct, mostly in tailwheel aircraft.

Do write back and tell me about Alaskan flying. I’d love to hear all about it.

    Thumbs up! Ann

    JOY!

Welcome. I’m the only Idaho gal I believe so it’s great to see you among us as a rep for both Alaska and Idaho. Not much flying right now–in the middle of a big snow cycle. But, Brundage opens this weekend and I’ve been skate skiing twice at Bear and twice at Ponderosa. Let me know when you’re coming to the lower 48 and we’ll SKI.

Hi Joy, welcome to LLT – so glad to see another lady with a Supercub here. Are you “joycub” on Sc.org? “Windy” is also here, along with Vicky “Tamarack.” Which cargo pod do you have?
