I’m hoping for a huge turnout at our Lady Taildraggers Fly-in the end of this month. If you’re not registered, no problem, there’s still time! I’m counting down the days hoping for blue skies for all of us flying into Savannah-Hardin County Airport, Tennessee! Motels and transportation are available for non-campers. LLT Fly-in Details The 2013 fly-in tshirt Kelly Jeffries is modeling turned out fabulous and I can’t wait to get my hot little hands on mine! They’ll be in Savannah for you to pick up if you pre-ordered and there’ll be just a few extra for sale. Kelly enlisted her artist friend to do the artwork so please let her know you appreciate it when you see her. And even sooner than our LLT fly-in, I’m heading to Gaston’s Resort for the OK18 Fly-in. PLEASE come! I’ll be flying down to 3M0 early Friday, May 24 for a couple days and doing their way-cool Saturday Poker Run. Still room in the cabin for any ladies needing a spot for Friday or Saturday night. Call Judy at 317-506-2737. For a $25 donation to the Wounded Warriors Project you can have one heck of a flying day. Fly to any or all of the stops; you can pick up cards back at 3M0 for any stops missed. The first landing at The Valley Airport is a fly-in breakfast and there’s a lunch stop a little later. Should be a blast! Everyone welcome to come. Please give me a call if you’re thinking about it and I’ll give you more details.

I lucked out today getting my very first sailplane ride on what turned out to be a near perfect thermal condition day. Many thanks to sailplane pilot Nyal Williams for the invitation and to pilot, Ron Clarke for an extraordinary flight. Winds were gusting over 20 when I departed MQJ in my Rans S7 for the short 30 mile hop to Alexandria, Indiana to meet up with the glider guys. I figured it might be a good day for sailplanes based on how much the up and down-drafts slammed me around on my short flight. Luckily I was right about that. I know a lot of you ladies have your glider rating and after today I’m going to have to figure out a way to make it happen for me too. I was more than a little surprised at the basic stick and rudder skills that a glider constantly demands. And what a blast doing slow, tight turns while listening to the audio variometer’s pitch rise, fall and rise again as we tried to stay in the lift. I seemed to get fixated on watching the instrument itself which is silly since you can hear the pitch constantly changing. Better to focus your sight outside and fly the aircraft. I can see myself flying an imaginary line of cumulus clouds cross-country, sailing from one cloud to the next searching for the ultimate lift. What I’m having a little more trouble visualizing is climbing out tethered 200′ behind a Pawnee trying to hold that precise perfect position. I know I can do it but that part’s going to take a little practice. Same thing with the landing. The approach is very similar to what I’m used to but I don’t typically drive it on to the tarmac like we seemed to do today. I slow it down with flaps, let the speed bleed off and usually full stall with a flare vs. the sailplane’s “spoiler on” approach and plant the main wheel near the numbers landing. They both work, just something that will take some practice. I flew home, checked my Facebook and found this very nice follow up note between the guys, cc to me….. Judy was very lucky to experience the good conditions today and seemed to very much enjoy the flight . She actually was well able to fly the glider and would have no difficulty getting a rating . My summary of the flight : * 3 minute tow to 2000 agl . * 1 hour flight covering over 50 miles Alex / Marion / Elwood / Bonges Restaurant / Alex. using just 4 thermals . * Average climb rate for whole flight 4 knots * Best Thermal average 7 knots * Best altitude 8300 msl . * Winds 320 / 15 Tell her I enjoyed showing her how efficient gliders are ! Ron (ZA) I shot this short video of our approach & landing in the Grob and you can immediately hear the audio variometer.

Sally Canning is based at Tuscon Valley Ranch, New Mexico. 600 hours in a Citabria; 400 hours in a Maule. I fly a taildragger because that is all I have ever known and because of our ranching. I don’t gather cattle with the plane but prefer to keep the plane at home. I live far enough away it is more convenient to fly to town (and a lot more fun). For many years we had several ranches and that is how we got back and forth. I co-piloted with my father for many years, but never PIC in his Bonanza. I started when I was 7; I was flying the plane while my father slept. Then in 1994 I got my private so I could continue flying for my fathers ranch. I have a nice Maule, N40330 for sale. My web site is www.laughingsheepfarm.com and have a super (difficult) grass strip (with sprinkler system, windsock and 1960′). Fly in and eat at our wonderful restaurant. I have cabins and private fishing also. Live music..we love life. Google 124 Orchard View Lane, Lincoln, NM and the GPS on Google Earth will take you there. OH!!! I just named my new little horse. Her name is Bonanza SureCan Fly. Happy Trials and Skies, Sally

Has anyone had the pleasure of reading the book “The Flying Girl”? I came across a photo of the book today and was immediately intrigued. The book’s hard-cover has an image of a young woman with scarf blowing in the wind, seated and flying what appears to be a Wright Flyer. How exciting – a book written before the era of Wacos, Fleets, or Travel Airs with an image of a woman pilot! I discovered it was first published in 1911 and was written by L. Frank Baum under the pseudonym “Edith Van Dyne” the author of The Wizard of Oz. It is “a high-flying adventure featuring intrepid girl aviator Orissa Kane. Like Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, Orissa is intelligent, self-reliant and always persevering. Circumstances force young Orissa Kane into the air in her brother’s innovative new airplane. But a deadly foe is intent on sending her crashing back to earth. Soar to new heights with the Flying Girl as she braves countless dangers to achieve worldwide acclaim.” With a little Wikipedia research I discovered, “In the book, Baum pursued an innovative blending of genres to create a feminist adventure melodrama. The book was followed by a sequel, The Flying Girl and Her Chum, published the next year, 1912.” “The first book opens with a Foreword in which Baum thanks Wilbur Wright and Glenn Curtiss “for courtesies extended during the preparation of this manuscript.” Curtiss and the Wright Brothers appear briefly in the book, along with other early “aeronauts” like Walter Brookins and Arch Hoxsey. Baum’s treatment of heavier-than-air powered flight through both books is strongly affirmative.” I find everything about this absolutely amazing…..the books were written by the author of one of the most famous books ever written, The Wizard of Oz, they portray women as competent, accomplished individuals several years before women won the right to vote in the U.S., and there is even a Foreword where Wilbur Wright and Glenn Curtiss are personally thanked. I WANT these books! Better yet, I want them in original print! Gotta go now, Ebay’s calling my name!

As long as I live, I will never understand people. I am completely, utterly mystified by most of them. Will somebody please explain to me how people I know, friends, co-workers, neighbors, the shoe salesman, can be so completely uninterested in flying and airplanes? I’m serious. My experience has been that when I attempt to talk about flying to non-aviators they frequently change the subject … as quickly as possible. For the record, this isn’t anything new; it’s always cast a tiny shadow on my love for flying. I naively used to think “oh, they’re probably envious of my flying and think I’m bragging – I better pipe down about it.” It’s taken me years to realize they’re not envious at all, they’re honestly, totally bored by the subject. Example: I have a great weekend flying, go to work and start talking about it and my co-workers’ eyes glaze over and then they change the subject. OK, I realize I’m not the only person with a life and everybody has great weekends. If you work weekdays, weekends are bound to be good. But just every once in a while you’d think somebody would chime in with “how about a ride sometime?” or “I’d like to learn to fly someday”. Unbelievably, that doesn’t happen. To me, the all encompassing topic of “aviation” and every off shoot of it is interesting at a very minimum and escalates from there.I may not appreciate my friends’ reactions but I’ve at least come to terms with them. Those of us with that special “aviation” gene understand. Those without it will change the subject and never know what they missed. Check out the link to an article about a mom and her teenage daughter learning to fly together. AND be sure and read the last paragraph – the inspiration for my own comments. I’ve uttered similar words to Amy’s too many times to count! General Aviation News article by AMELIA T. REIHELD

Lisa Heinze is based at Yeager Airport, KCRW, Charleston, WV and 1AR9. I’m a student pilot learning to fly in my 1950 PA-20 Pacer at 1AR9 and KCRW. Introduced to aviation just five years ago with a first flight in a Decathalon, I fell in love with flying. I’m excited to learn to fly taildraggers as my husband and I are the owners and caretakers of our 1946 J-3 Cub, Starduster Too, a Lancair 235 and our 1946 Beech 18. I met my aviator husband five years ago at my B&B, after my first husband passed away. Our first date was a flight in the Decathalon and within three weeks I had flown in the J-3 Cub, the Starduster Too and the Eclipse Jet. I decided then that I just had to learn to fly. I love the aviation community and love spending time at our aviation community home. We love to spend time working on our historic taildraggers, attending fly ins, dressing up in our vintage clothes and flying our airplanes. It’s a challenge to own a 5 star rated bed and breakfast, keep up with that work and learn to fly; but, when our scedules work out, and we get a few days to fly in our taildraggers, I remember it’s a challenge I’m blessed to have. I absolutely love taildraggers, and I’ve learned how special it is to get my initial license in this kind of airplane.

Surprise to Mom (Judy Birchler) – From your children on Mother’s Day! I just want to tell you thank you! Thank you for always being there for me. Thank you for always guiding, encouraging, and supporting me. From infancy to adulthood, you’ve been there, every step of the way. From my first airplane ride (the first of many), to my church public speaking endeavors, to my days of fighting off meningitis in the hospital, to learning how to drive even though the thought terrified me (and probably you to), to college graduation (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) and even to the day I married my husband. You’ve always been there, always ready, never failing, full of love, encouragement, and support. You’ve been my stronghold, and my protection. I feel so blessed to know that no matter what, I’ll always have your love and support, now and always. And I want you to know, that I would not be who I am today without your great influence on my life. You’re an amazing woman, who I look up to and greatly admire. I am proud to call you Mom. Thank you for everything. I love you! Love Jessie ============ Mom, This year Jessica and I wanted our appreciation to be known. We wanted others to realize, just as we do, that this site is not for you. You built it for them. You and dad have raised us to be proud not just of our own abilities but be amazed at what others can show us about the world. This mantra is how we approach the world and it is the foundation LLT was built upon. You are incredible. You ALL are incredible. The planet is full of incredible, passionate, beautiful, focused women. We are so lucky to be given a glimpse into the wonder and amazement of flight from your unique perspective. From Craig and the rest of the Birchler family, Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

After feedback from LLT members it sounds like an “all female” LLT event might be something we consider adding to our 2014 calendar! If you would like to host a fly-in for lady taildragger pilots now may be your chance. I’m still in the exploration stage of adding a “Ladies Only Taildragger Fly-in” somewhere in the U.S. in 2014. If one of our lady taildragger pilots, or a group of ladies, would like to host an event I’d love to hear from you. That’s right! At an airport of your choice - at a time that works for you. Hosting a LadiesLoveTaildraggers Fly-in is a big commitment. I am looking for a person or group that believes they are capable of orchestrating and hosting the event with limited help from me. I will do everything I can from afar but this would truly require a complete willingness to organize it and make most of the arrangements yourself. If you are interested and know of an airport that would be appropriate, in a location where camping and hotels are accessible, we can make it happen! Please give it some thought, do some research, then send your proposal to LadyTaildraggers@gmail.com. Please include the following and submit proposals by July 15, 2013. Your name(s) Suggested location: airport name & identifier Detailed information about the airport and airport management Any events you would like to include (speakers, fly-outs, activities) Camping & hotel information Arrangements for meals for attendees Date (1 to 3 days?) Estimated cost for attendees Why you would like to host a LLT ladies only flyin Any experience you have organizing flying events Don’t worry, we will continue to host our annual fly-in that celebrates women taildragger pilots but doesn’t prevent men from joining in the fun! A Ladies Only Taildragger Flyin would be one more event for our members to consider attending.

I recently received an email from a trustee of the International Women’s Air & Space Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m passing on her message in this post because… You might have photographs or documents you’d like to share or preserve The museum looks like a perfect fly-out opportunity for our LLT group some summer weekend. If you agree, please leave a comment! Check out their website for more information, International Women Air & Space Museum. Dear Lady Taildraggers: I was recently researching Florence Gunderson Klingensmith and found your website. You have a wonderful repository of pictures and information. I am a Trustee with the International Women’s Air and Space Museum, Inc. (iwasm.org) and I do research for IWASM. I am looking for photos and information and articles on women pilots, parachutists, and generally women in aviation around the world. If you need a safe place to put original photos, the International Women’s Air and Space Museum has a secure and archivally protected respository for pictures and papers. You can write to Cris Takacs our Collections Manager to ask about our protected archives.
Last week when Bill Tracy posted on Facebook, “This weekend looks good for supper at Butler Ohio. Anyone interested in flying in?” I had to give it some serious thought. After all, it’s 4 hours round trip in the S7 and even though I love to fly, I love it best when I’m not flying in a straight line! But the chance to fly to a beautiful grass strip in eastern Ohio and meet up with a bunch of the infamous Ohio Bush Pilots turned out to be too good to pass up. So, with the Boydster in tow, we headed east getting bumped up and down and looking for that sweet spot where the quartering headwind would be just a little less painful. That didn’t really work out but you can’t blame me for trying to shave a couple minutes off a flight. Turns out when you’re having a good time 2 hours can slip by pretty quickly. I lost track just how many beautiful older and newer taildraggers flew in to the 3000′ private grass strip in Ohio …. and nary a nose-dragger in the bunch. If you like Scouts, Carbon Cubs, Super Cubs, Piper Pacers, Piper J-5s and Rans S7s you’d have been in the right place. With 10+ airplanes flying in from distances of 25 miles to over 200 miles you’d think everybody would filter in a few at a time. Not so. We all seemed to converge on the tiny community called Butler in a few short minutes. That part was great and must have even surprised a few people on the ground because when we departed after lunch several families came out to see us off. I picked the right day to fly with the Ohio Bush pilots because the girls came close to out numbering the guys for a change. Most of the ladies aren’t pilots but that’s OK – they were having a good time flying with their boyfriends & husbands, something we all know a lot of women won’t do. AND, one lady taildragger pilot who did attend was Jamie Swihart who flew helicopters until recently and now owns a beautiful Piper Pacer with her husband. There’s a bicycle trail that runs right by the airport which makes it a quick, scenic and easy walk in town. The really wonderful part of the walk is the remarkable glimpse you get of this tiny town. You hear people say all the time, “it felt like I stepped back in time” but really, I felt like I stepped back in time! Seeing ‘Mail Pouch’ on this old barn did make me stop admiring the walk and start watching where I stepped for a few minutes. Wish I’d had a little more time to explore but the great old barn wood and foundations kept me interested both directions. *. After departing I did a little flying with the Tracy’s checking out the rolling hills of eastern Ohio. And it just wouldn’t have been right to fly that close to John Graham’s strip and not stop by and check it out. It’s a beautiful airport that anybody would be envious to own. I will say that people with their own strips have always been a mystery to me; so much work, so much money, how do they find the time to fly? I still don’t have the answer to that but I do know that not many people fly more than John does, Whatever the answer is, he knows it. There were many highlights to this great day, but one of my favorites was coming back to the airport and finding this tshirt on the front seat of my S7. I had to laugh! It must be official – surely this meant I’m an official Ohio Bush pilot now?! Wouldn’t you guess? I ran Bill Tracy down – I ran John Graham down fishing for an answer. “Am I really an Ohio Bush pilot?” “Isn’t there some kind of induction ceremony?” Isn’t there some formal affair that everybody’s coming to so I can accept?” And that answer I’m still waiting on.

Sue Schaffer is based at KMYL, McCall Municipal Airport, McCall, Idaho. Been married to a pilot for 33 years, and recently he got interested in back country flying. Knowing that I couldn’t even sit on the back of a motorcycle, I knew I would have to do something about this flying thing, and I wondered if I could really learn to fly. We winter in Arizona and the initial thought was to take some back seat time in a cub and get used to it. After a half hour flight, I knew I was signing up for the whole deal. Since we are interested in taildraggers, I decided to go that route for my private certificate. Happy to say that I solo’d one day before my 52nd birthday in a Supercub on Friday, April 12th. Loved seeing all the smiles on the women on this website and thought I’d join…but really, I think I was just taking a break from studying for the written!

Sometimes really interesting stories come in the oddest ways. This one is from our LadiesLoveTaildraggers Facebook Group via John Graham, who saw it posted by Randy Corfman on www.supercub.org. It’s about ”woman aviator” (sorry Randy, I’m going with) “Ohio aviatrix”, Caro Bayley Bosco. I was shocked I had never heard of Caro and am happy these two taildragger pilots are spreading the word! Please read Randy’s beautiful story about how he met this amazing woman in the latter years of her life. He ends reminding everyone to “Take an older person out for lunch and sit back and learn!” And in your case Randy, “sit back and be amazed”.Thanks Randy for a beautiful post! 30,203 Feet High…A Woman Getting High in A Super Cub In reading the responses to another thread I began on sc.org I must say that I have been struck by the responses and the wonderful experiences that many of you have posted. I would encourage you to go to that thread (http://www.supercub.org/forum/showth…an-EAA-Meeting) and take a look. After reading some of the responses today I got up from my desk, walked around it and right at my eye level is a framed photograph of Caro Bayley, a woman I met many years ago, and it occurred to me that she carries quite an important significance for those of us who fly and appreciate super cubs. Caro Bayley Bosco is a person I met many years ago. She and I crossed paths when she was elderly, at a meeting unrelated to aviation. When happened upon her she struck up a conversation with me, when she discovered I was a pilot and during the conversation she told me that when she was younger she had set an altitude record in a super cub. This was years before I became enamored with the super cub, but it was remarkable that she described the event in such great detail. She also told me that she had been an aerobatic champion. She was about 80 years of age when I met her, and I wasn’t sure how much to believe. One could tell, though, that she had her wits about her, she was an ass-kicker, and I filed this away. A week or so later I received a package in the mail from Ms. Bayley, and it was a framed photograph of her standing beside her Pitts Special, N8M , and she wrote “and it flew as good as it looks”, signed Caro Bayley. I couldn’t help but notice the lettering on her Pitts “International Women’s Aerobatic Champion 1951” and I have hung this on the wall of my office ever since. My meeting with Caro was years before internet, but a few years ago I did a google search for her and found the following articles. Please take a moment to read this, but in summary she did, in fact, ask Curtis Pitts to build her a Pitts Special. On the morning of January 4, 1951, she won the title in N8M. On that same day she flew a 1951 standard 125 hp super cub, taking off from a blimp base on the causeway near Miami and here is what she said: “…I took off, had oxygen and a barograph, was up for about four hours, came down, then did my aerobatic act. The temperature was ninety on the ground and was thirty-four degrees below zero at altitude. The Cub went up to fifteen [thousand feet] nicely, but up to twenty it was a bit draggy. By the time I hit thiry I stayed at one altitude for a long time.” The Miami paper reported “BLONDE SETS NEW ALTITUDE MARK”, at an actual altitude of 30,203 feet. The Federation Aeronautique Internationale recognized her achievement as a world record for Class 11 aircraft (gross weight between 1102 and 2204 lbs). Her record held until 1984 when it was broken by a 210 hp Mooney. She was a WASP pilot, a mechanic and she when I met her in her later years her charm and smile were infectious. I had no idea who I had had the good fortune of meeting, and even now I am finding out things about this woman that are intriguing. I came across the envelope in which she had sent the photograph and I tried to trace her several years ago, learning that she lived in Springfield, Ohio, where she had married and raised four children. She passed away September 13, 2007. Here are some links to more about Caro Bayley: http://womenaviators.org/Caro.html http://www.wingsacrossamerica.us/web/bosca_caro.html http://wwii-women-pilots.org/classli…sca%20dies.pdf I have shared the story of meeting Caro Bayley with my daughter and son, encouraging them to consider that women have played a very important role in aviation, and to encourage women to follow their dreams! Caro’s story is such an inspiration! I am so sorry it has taken me this long to relate it to you. I was walking on the Airventure grounds at Oshkosh a few years ago and right smack in front of the EAA Aerobatic building sat N8M! I took a few photos of it and shared the experience with my kids. While Caro was not a war hero, she is an inspiration to all of us, women and men alike. She, like the people described in the thread I mentioned previously, are out there just begging for someone to ask about them. We have so much to learn. Take an older person out for lunch and sit back and learn! 30,000 feet in a super cub! Wowser. Randy

We had a super meeting and super turn out at yesterday’s lady taildraggers flyin planning meeting at Savannah, TN. Val Thal-Slocom and Pattie Barnes flew in from Val’s grass strip “Hawk’s Nest” in her C195 and were full of great ideas. They are going to be a huge help at our flyin so when you see them be sure and thank them for all they are doing! The Friday fly-out lunch is at Val’s strip and she and Pattie are going to be two very busy ladies preparing an amazing lunch for everyone who flys over. They tell me Val is quite a cook – we’re not talking hotdogs; Catfish Gumbo with catfish caught from a lake on their property. Venison Taco Soup – venison from Vals daughter’s last hunt. Salad. AND….. specialty flavored cupcakes made by Pattie’s daughter (how does Banana Pudding or Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Cupcakes sound?)!! I’m so happy to report 11 people made their way to Savannah, Tn for our fly-in planning meeting, 9 ladies and 2 very LUCKY guys. They came from Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio and Alabama to offer their ideas and help. Pretty incredible and SOOOOO helpful! Some ladies accepted big challenges; Fly-in Coordinators (the women with all the answers) will be Helen Brennan on Friday & Pattie Barnes on Saturday. Saturday Porker run coordinator will be Anne Wright. And the one lady we all owe a big thank you to is Montill Warren who once again will have the biggest job, arranging food for the entire fly-in! Lots of other people will be pitching in to help too – thank you all! And to Montill’s surprise an absolutely incredible announcement was made at the meeting. Union City TN Airport Manager Jo Ann Sperr chose the day our lady taildraggers were meeting with Montill to tell her she has been selected as an inductee into the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame. Montill had no idea she had been selected for this honor and it was a delight to be there for the announcement. I’m not positive but looked like I saw a few happy tears fall from Montill’s eyes when Jo Ann made the wonderful announcement. Hey, a Tennessee state flag! Several of us decided it was a good photo op for a Tennessee flyin meeting. Seeing lady pilots flying great taildraggers may be something you rarely see but that’s about to change May 31 – June 2! Hope to see you at the fly-in. You must register in advance to guarantee there’s plenty of great food to handle the crowd. Fly-in Registration 2013 Lady Taildragger fly-in tshirts are only available on a pre-sale basis. T-shirt Order Form For those wondering about whether men are invited to attend the flyin, here’s the scoop. We love men! Some of the ladies will even bring one along with them. There’s no charge for camping or any food for anyone in this group. However, men flying in unaccompanied by a woman will be charged $15 a day for food or $30 for the weekend per person. No charge for camping. Everyone planning on coming should Register. See you at KSHN soon!
